Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has become the first cement manufacturer globally to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), a platform aimed at accelerating decarbonization efforts across industries. The alliance focuses on facilitating knowledge exchange among public and private stakeholders in energy-intensive sectors.

In its commitment to sustainability, Ambuja Cements aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050, with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company plans to invest ?100 billion in renewable energy projects, targeting a capacity of 1GW and 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). This initiative is expected to enable 60% of its expanded capacity to run on green power by FY2028.

Ambuja Cements has already utilized over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources and achieved a status of 11x water-positive and 8x plastic-negative in FY24.

Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director of Ambuja Cements, stated, “This marks a significant step in our sustainability journey. We are among the lowest emission-intensity cement producers globally and are implementing strategic initiatives to further reduce our GHG emissions. Joining AFID will allow us to leverage the experiences of industry peers and share our decarbonization approach.”

The AFID aims to foster dialogue and enhance cooperation among companies to develop effective decarbonization strategies aligned with national commitments. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) oversees the alliance’s activities.
