Punjab govt to spend Rs 14 bn in six districts

The Punjab government has decided to spend Rs 1,434 crore on upgrading basic civic amenities like road, water, sanitation and social infrastructure facilities in six districts in the border areas. The amount would be spent on improving facilities in 18 blocks of Amritsar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Tarn Taran districts in the state. The government will spend these funds on the construction and repair of roads including link roads through PWD (B&R) and Mandi Board, implementation of potable water and sanitation schemes, strengthening and revamping of canals, water courses, etc. The investment will also be used to build channels and distributaries, upgradation of health care facilities, animal husbandry facilities, besides revamping the infrastructure of schools and colleges.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal sanctioned the amount to ensure a better quality of life to the inhabitants of these areas. The package will help in ensuring the fruits of welfare schemes percolate to all through inclusive development at the grassroots level. Mr Badal advised the MLAs representing these areas on how the amount should be spent involving local Panchayats, Municipal Committees and other local bodies.

TotalEnergies and Holcim Launch Floating Solar Plant in Belgium

TotalEnergies and Holcim have commissioned a floating solar power plant in Obourg, Belgium, built on a rehabilitated former chalk quarry that has been converted into a lake. The project has a generation capacity of 31 MW and produces around 30 GWh of renewable electricity annually, which will be used to power Holcim’s nearby industrial operations. The project is currently the largest floating solar installation in Europe dedicated entirely to industrial self-consumption. To ensure minimal impact on the surrounding landscape, more than 700 metres of horizontal directional drilling were used to connect the solar installation to the electrical substation. The project reflects ongoing collaboration between the two companies to support industrial decarbonisation through renewable energy solutions and innovative infrastructure development.
