Amma Cement, which launched on January 5, 2015, has sold nearly 16,000 tonne across the Tamil Nadu. According to officials, they will soon ramp up procurement to hit their sales target of 2 lakh tonne. Reports suggest that the response has been enthusiastic, an indication of not just the demand for cement but also the persistent high market prices of the commodity in the region. If the government does achieve its target, it would be selling more than two million tonne of subsidised Amma cement a year, which is more than 20 per cent of the total annual consumption in the state.

Only individuals constructing their own houses that are less than 1,500 sq ft are eligible for Amma cement. The subsidised cement has sold more in rural areas. Namakkal tops among the districts by notching up sales of 1,371 tonne.
