Essroc Cement Company will pay a penalty of $1.7 million and invest around USD 33 million in pollution control technology for allegedly having violated the Clean Air Act(CAA) at six of its Portland Cement manufacturing plants. This information was provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Justice (DOJ).The measure to be undertaken by Essroc will result in reduction of more than 7,000 tons of harmful nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide pollution annually which can lead to asthma, acid rain and smog. It will also entail the installation by Essroc of state of the art pollution control technology for control of sulfur dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide at its five plants. The company will also be required to install a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) system at two long wet kilns at its Logansport, Ind. Plant. The company will also shut its sixth plant, which is located at Bessemer, Penn permanently.An amount of USD 745,000 will also be spent by Essroc for mitigating the impact of excess emissions in the past from its plants.
