The recent discovery of limestone reserves of over 190 mt in Mozambique’s Zamb?zia province is expected to make it feasible to set up a cement factory, the Provincial Director for mining resources and energy for Zamb?zia said. The provincial government was attempting to find potential investors for exploration of the limestone reserves, discovered in the districts of Morrumbala and Namacurra. The discovery of the limestone in Zambezia comes at a time when the Mozambican government is working at full throttle for cement factories to be set up in the coming five-year period, which may increase existing production capacity and minimise the rise in prices and lack of the product on the national market. Amongst the proposals received by the Mozambican Centre for Investment Promotion, is one from Chinese investors, with plans to set up two cement production units, in the northern province of Nampula, and another in Salamanga, in Maputo province. Many businessmen are interested in investing in the construction of a cement factory in the Magude district of Maputo province, and in Inhambane province, in the south of Mozambique. Currently, cement factories operate in the north, south and central parts of Mozambique, some of which belong to Portuguese group Cimpor – which is not sufficient for the needs of the Mozambican market, thus they have to import cement from neighbouring countries, particularly South Africa.
