The European Parliament has approved changes to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) aimed at easing compliance for small and occasional importers. Passed with 564 votes in favour, the revisions waive CBAM allowance payments for imports under 50 tonnes—benefiting 90 per cent of importers, mainly SMEs and individuals. Large-scale importers, including in cement, remain unaffected. Despite the exemption, 99 per cent of emissions from key sectors like cement and steel will still be covered.
