NITI Aayog hosted a workshop at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to discuss Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) as a key strategy for decarbonising India’s cement sector. Experts highlighted CO2 storage potential in the Krishna-Godavari basin and its use in producing methanol, biodegradable plastics, and chemicals. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, emphasised the challenge of balancing economic growth with emissions reduction, while VK Saraswat stressed CCUS’s role in meeting climate commitments. The workshop underscored the need for collaboration among government, industry and academia to develop scalable, cost-effective solutions for sustainable cement production and India’s net-zero goal by 2070.
