A report by the Mineral Products Association (MPA), funded by Innovate UK, reveals that using reclaimed clay and brick waste in cement production could reduce embodied carbon by up to 30 per cent and support the UK’s circular economy. The study demonstrated that calcined clays from these materials could replace traditional by-products like GGBS and fly-ash, potentially diverting 1.4 million tonnes of waste. The project, backed by industry leaders, confirmed the effectiveness of both rotary kiln and flash heating methods for producing high-quality calcined clays, marking a significant step in the UK’s drive toward low-carbon cement.
