Working on the ‘polluter pays’ maxim, the Government of India has prohibited dumping and disposal of fly-ash that is discharged from coal and lignite-based thermal power-plant.
The government has made 100% utilisation of fly-ash in an eco-friendly manner mandatory, and has introduced a penalty regime. This will be effective from 01 April 2022. Non-compliance of the rules will invite a penalty of Rs 1000 per tonne on unutilised fly-ash. In case of accumulated fly-ash or legacy ash, a 10-year window is provided to power plants to progressively utilise it.
