Kiln alignment is a complex science that is based on accurate measurements, an understanding of design and proficient experts who will factor in the plethora of parameters that affects alignment.

Generally, improper alignment of kilns is related to its unequal mechanical balance. It is one of the most critical issues associated with kiln statistics and dynamics.

The correct mechanical balance can be achieved only when the forces and stresses acting on the kiln are distributed optimally. This includes forces on the carrying system and the shell as well. It is the kiln geometry and the relation between the rotation axes of the kiln, as well as support rollers that govern the distribution of these forces.

Kiln geometry terms encompass the carrying system configuration, shell state and drive section parameters. Knowledge of these factors, along with the knowledge of the kiln operating-technological parameters, aids the ability to make deductions on it. The measurement of the carrying system geometry, kiln shell geometry and kiln drive section parameters can be obtained during its normal operation and during the shutdown period. Allan Smith Engineering-Eurokiln has the capability to take measurements in a wide range and conduct analysis with specalised high quality equipment for applications.

Parameters measured while the kiln is in operation are used in system analysis to check hot kiln alignment. For the other method, called the cold kiln alignment, measurements are taken when the kiln is cold, usually during the erection process. In the cold alignment, the operating conditions are simulated, taking both the potential temperature distribution and the value of the technological process into consideration.

A mutual confluence of the above parameters are factored in, to arrive at the correct setting of the support rollers` positions. This is done by correlating carrying system measurements with the measurements of the shell’s state. Defining kilns alignment and mechanical balance is a complex issue which has to account for several factors based on geometrical measurements, professional inspection, temperature distribution, direct measurements of the axial reaction forces of the rollers and the element`s deformations analysis, for given kinematic operating parameters and surrounding conditions.

Application

The alignment analysis finds application in defining the rotary kiln’s state with the considerable overall dimensions such as cement kilns, incinerating plants, dryers, coolers, calciners, crystallisers, mixers, etc. It can be also successfully applied with objects like the drum without typical rolling carrying systems like those used for any kind of mills with slide bearings and rotary machines of similar construction.
