The Ambassador of Japan, Nobuhito Hobo, complemented Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) PLC for its contribution towards the strengthening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.Tokyo Cement was established in 1982 realising the potential of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, as a cement manufacturing hub. The company contributes to the economic development and employment levels in Sri Lanka, especially in the Eastern Province.
Based on a biomass power plant, Tokyo Cement has promoted sustainable development and green power in Sri Lanka. The company is also a pioneer in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR) with activities such as the AYS Gnanam Construction Training Academy, school nutrition programmes, post tsunami relief, empowering farming communities, mangrove reforestation and coral rehabilitation. Some of the projects are conducted jointly with the Sri Lankan government and NGOs.
