“Particulate matter,” also known as particle pollution or PM, is a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. The primary reason for the rise in particulate pollution, type of air pollution, is because of industrialisation. Major sources of particulate matter emission are factories, power stations, incinerators, industries, automobiles, and diesel generators. All of this is anthropogenic sources or due to human activities. Exposure to such particles can affect both your lungs and your heart. Numerous scientific studies have linked particle pollution exposure to a variety of problems, including decreased lung function, increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing. Gurvinder Singh of Centre for Science and Environment takes us through one such case study.
