CII- Godrej GBC in partnership with Cement Manufacturer’s Association (CMA) organised the 14th edition of Green Cementech 2018 on May 17-18, 2018 at Hyderabad. While addressing the delegates at the 14th CII-CMA Green Cementech 2018, KC Jhanwar, Deputy Managing Director, UltraTech Cement Limited, underlined that, with growing demand, Indian cement industry has to identify innovative solutions to address challenges and set example for other sectors. He also highlighted that cement sector has to play a critical role in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) on climate change and sustainable production and consumption. Jhanwar said that cement sector has achieved excellent levels of energy efficiency, but still lot has to be done. Collaborative and multi-stakeholder approach, adopting lifecycle approach and reinventing will create win-win situation for all, he underlined. Philip Mathew, Chairman, Green Cementech 2018, and Chief Manufacturing Officer, ACC Limited, in his theme address, highlighted that the cement sector has come a long way for achieving excellent specific energy consumption and added that the Indian cement industry over the last 20 years has reduced its electrical Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) by about 32 per cent and reduction in thermal SEC by 11 per cent. He added that alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) thermal substitution rate increased from 0.6 per cent in 2010 to 4 per cent in 2016.
Adding further, he highlighted that the estimated waste heat recovery (WHR) potential in Indian cement plants is 800 MW. Tapping this potential would result in monetary benefits of Rs 1,400 crore and fuel saving of 2 MT of coal and 12 to 15 per cent of power consumption of cement plant can be through WHR, he added.KN Rao, Co- Chairman, Green Cementech and Director-Energy & Environment, ACC Limited, highlighted the initiatives of CII-Godrej GBC in promoting green businesses approaches and strategies in Indian industry. He also underlined that Indian cement sector is well poised to set new global benchmarks in energy and environmental management. He called on the need and importance of promoting alternative energy fuel sources and forge national and international partnerships.
During the session, ACC Limited and Kesoram Industries Limited were awarded with GreenPro (Green Product) certification for their environment friendly products.
Cement related publications titled- History of Indian Cement Industry; Energy Benchmarking Version 3.0 and Status paper on AFR utilization in Indian Cement Industry were released on the first day of Green Cementech 2018.
CII-CMA ‘Distinguished Personality Award’ presented to Indira Dutt
As part of Green Cementech, CII-CMA felicitated Indira Dutt, Managing Director, KCP Limited with ‘CII- CMA Distinguished Personality Award’ for her outstanding contribution to the growth and spread of sustainable practices in Indian cement industry. Today as a result of her strategic inputs and thought leadership, Indian cement industry could imbibe some of the best practices in cement industry. Dr Shailendra Chouksey, President, CMA and Mathew presented the CII- CMA Distinguished Personality Award to Dutt.
Dutt, with her over 20 years of strategic planning and direction, has immensely contributed towards the growth and operations of the KCP cement plants across the country. Her vison and philosophy to modernise, indigenise and never compromise on technology has lifted the KCP cement plant to a new level. She played a pivotal role in steering the company to global recognition for its quality products and efficiency. KCP cement have successfully increased the energy efficiency and reduced GHG emissions through various measures like process optimisation, reducing clinker factor, increased use of AFR, renewable energy, etc. KCP units across the country are in the forefront in implementing some of the latest and futuristic energy efficient technologies.
