AP lawmaker wants cut in cement prices

Visakhapatnam North MLA P Vishnukumar Raju has sought an urgent intervention of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in reducing the "abnormal and unreasonable" increase in cement prices in the state.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the legislator said that all cement companies in AP had hiked prices from Rs 235 a bag to Rs 375 a bag.

"It is understood that this is in anticipation of the forthcoming introduction of GST from July. This pre-emptive action of stopping sale on CST basis for three months in advance is not fair. This has resulted in the overall high price of Rs 375 per bag. What is even more surprising is that all cement companies are quoting the same price which is a clear indication of the companies forming a cartel to escalate the price which is against law," Raju said.
