Trichy: Various energy-efficient technologies in recent times have brought down the usage of conventional energy source in cement and manufacturing sector. Rising usage of industrial waste for energy needs is expected to further ease pressure on conventional energy source.
As environmental consciousness among the industries had increased in the past five years, 4 per cent of energy needs is met through alternate energy source instead of depending on conventional energy sources like coal in the country.
Speaking at the second edition of the energy conference on energy efficient technologies in cement and manufacturing sector organised by the Trichy chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Friday, executive director of Dalmia Cement R A Krishna Kumar said that a change had been witnessed in energy-efficient initiatives over the past 5 years which was likely to grow in future.
While this sector had realized the need for energy-efficient measures as more than 70 percent of spending is on energy for cement manufacturing, switching over to high efficiency equipment and process optimization and waste elimination were some of the changes that cement industry had witnessed in recent times.
Energy initiatives in the cement industry in recent time are likely to save 30,000 megawatt energy of the power plants by 2020, he said while adding that it could be achieved through optimization and new technology introduced in the cement industry. "For instance if we say that 800 kcal energy is required to produce one tonne of cement two years ago, it has now come down to 700 kcal."
Stressing on the need for merger of technology in terms of conserving energy sources, Chairman of CII Trichy zone S Sampath said that waste should not be seen as mere waste.
