The Maharashtra government may ask the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to redevelop Dharavi.
Looking at project viability, the state is planning to divide Dharavi into smaller plots. So far, the redevelopment plan has been a non-starter. In the latest round, private players showed little interest in the project, despite global tenders being floated.
Currently, any proposed redevelopment programme will have to manage the huge number of slum dwellers and relocate a number of commercial structures. Again, the real estate industry is also going through a lean phase, and the Dharavi project is not receiving response from private developers.
Maharashtra’s Housing Minister Prakash Mehta has convened a meeting to discuss the issue with the principal secretary of housing department, principal secretary of urban development department and SRA.
