We are closely following CSI India low carbon technology roadmap which maps energy efficiency targets till 2050, says Prashant K Tripathy, Executive Director ? Productions & Processes, Dalmia Cement Bharat Ltd. Excerpts from the interview…

How do you rate the company in energy efficiency?
We are a traditional company and religiously save energy. We follow best manufacturing processes to be energy efficient. We have been recognised by various government bodies for our efforts. Two of our plants, in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are continuously receiving national energy awards and are among the world best in efficiency.

What are your long-term plans for improving energy efficiency?
We are closely following CSI India low carbon technology roadmap which maps energy efficiency targets till 2050. We have started a third-party study to implement the recommendations given in technical papers of the road map in association with IFC.

What is your unit per tonne of cement target?
Although our plants are recognised for energy efficiency, we are still setting yearly targets and raising the bar higher. The aim is to become the best in the industry on these parameters.

What modifications/process improvement you have done to help conserve energy?
Recently we have replaced old blowers by energy-efficient turbo and hybrid blowers. We are reviewing the efficiency of our old motors and replacing them with the latest energy-efficient motors. We are installing better kiln seals and new-generation kiln burners to save on both thermal and electrical energy.

What is the scope of AFR and what are the steps initiated by your company?
In all our units, we have taken the initiative to maximise the use of AFR as it is a key lever to reduce CO2 emissions. We are the proud member of Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) and are tackling all challenges to use AFR as per CSI guidelines/charter.

To what extent you have geared up to take the advantage of the PAT initiative?
Our energy efficiency improvement projects, AFR initiative and use of maximum possible slag and fly ash in blended cement all contribute to meet PAT targets. We are envisaging WHR projects in our plants to further improve energy efficiency.

What is the scope of using cementitious materials to optimise clinker content?
We are maximising use of fly ash and slag in our blended cements. They are an excellent means to bring down the percentage of energy intensive clinker in cement.

Brief us on the areas/methods you have harnessed IT to bring down energy consumption?
Information technology is helping in better use of plant instrumentation and automation systems for energy efficient operation of the plants. We have installed Energy Management Systems (EMS) which provides relevant inputs to energy efficiency teams.
