The Construction Chemicals Manufacturers Association of India (CCMA) had organised a Construction Chemicals International Conference (C3) on February 17-18, 2012 at Hotel Ramada, Powai, Mumbai. The CCMA held a conference on "Emerging Materials, Methods and Practices" in Mumbai. The participants in the conference were resellers of construction chemicals, EPC contractors, construction chemical professionals, architects & builders, consultants, civil engineers etc. The conference received a tremendous response from the construction chemicals fraternity. Eminent luminaries graced the occasion and gave presentations on different aspects of construction chemicals.Ravindra Gettu of IIT, Chennai spoke on the effective use of superplasticizers for sustainable concrete technology. He stated, "Concrete construction needs to be made more sustainable by using less water and clinker and more waste material. The overall cost effectiveness of the construction needed to be increased along with an improvement in defect insensitivity. The use of superplasticizers helps in the formation of more uniform and homogenous mix. It gives better performance and improves durability. It also aids in the use of waste as mineral admixtures."Dr Bruce J.Christensen,VP, Global Technologies and Innovation Management, BASF Construction Chemicals noted, "Sustainable construction is the application of sustainable development principles to the construction sector, considering full life cycle costs versus only upfront costs. Any evaluation of sustainable construction in the most comprehensive context should consider all aspects of the value chain, including raw materials, energy consumption, land use, emissions etc." Ulrich.K.Weber, Business Development Manager Region IMEA (India, Middle East, Africa), Sika, elaborated, "The more common, high level definitions of sustainability are beneficial in a conceptual sense, but they are of only minimal assistance practically. We may focus at first to the doable by our industry in sustainable construction. The tenets of sustainability may be divided into three categories: minimize the burden on the environment, conserve energy and extend lifespan."
