Cement supply and prices at the retail market in Dar es Salaam have stabilised after a major producer resumed full production. One of the Tanzania Portland Cement Company plants developed mechanical problems late last month and sent prices of the commodity skyrocketing. Twiga Cement which produces 25,000 tonne weekly, supplies more than 60 per cent of Dar es Salaam and neighbouring regions cement consumption. Prices increased by about Sh 2,000 per 50 kg bag last week in the city after. Various outlets sold a cement bag at between Sh15,000 and Sh15,500 from Sh13,000 a week before. Currently, Twiga production covers approximately 40 per cent of domestic demand with the rest being covered by the remaining two factories, which are in Tanga and Mbeya. The Tanzania’s local cement industries have a total output of three million tonne against the country’s yearly demand of 2.1 million tonne.
