c based Twiga Cement plant has halted plans to close its Wazo Hill plant in Tanzania’s city, Dar es Salaam following an agreement with Tanzanian government to relocate 952 villagers who invaded the firm’s premises on December 2011. The Tanzanian government has assured the company that the villagers who are staying on the land illegally will be relocated. The company spokesperson said that the villagers would be relocated to Mwembepande area, which is currently being surveyed by government. According to the spokesperson, the company intended to spend USD 100 million to expand operation by August 2011. Twiga Cement Company had said that it would consider suspending production and put on hold a USD 100 million expansion plan next month if Tanzanian government failed to abide by a court ruling and evict villagers who are occupying the firm’s premises at Wazo Hill on the northern outskirts of Dar es Salaam. The closure would make Tanzania to lose at least USD 1 million in taxes related payments from the plant annually. Tanzanian government’s promises to relocate Chasimba villagers to another area have failed to bare fruit for the last three years.
