Controversy surrounded the newly established construction cement factory at Mbagala Kizuini in Dar es Salaam as environmentalists and residents around the factory are unhappy and opposed to its presence. "We once protested and wanted this factory to be shifted from this place but nobody bothered to listen to us. We are extremely worried that what we hear (about health complications) from our colleagues living around cement factories can befall us," said Mr Philipo Jerome, a resident of Mbagala Kizuiani. The National Environmental Management Council (NEMC), Tanzania confirmed that the company plans to import clinkers from China or India or any other country it decides and process the materials at their factory, which may lead to increase in air pollution. Residents around the factory expressed their fear that the factory would pose devastating health problems. They said they were already surrounded by many other factories that seriously threatened their health. The NEMC officials will be conducting inspections to verify whether the factory complies with the environmental preservation measures as required by the laws of the land. There were others who were of the opinion that NEMC should educate the public on the pros and cons of having cement factories in residential areas and possible health hazards that might erupt.
